A Year After Quake, Haitians Glimpse Hunger-Free Future

ROME — One year ago Haiti was devastated by its biggest earthquake in two centuries. The humanitarian community launched a massive relief operation to meet the immediate needs of the people left homeless and hungry. Our role was to deliver urgently needed food aid to the quake survivors.

As the country started to rebuild, the focus of operations in Haiti shifted from short-term needs to the long term challenge. Now, 12 months on, WFP’s goal is to help Haiti get to the point where it can feed itself and become more resilient to natural disasters.

Haiti WFP High Quality

WFP rations to Haiti.

“water would be snaking through more than 60 acres of fields bringing the promise of abundant crops to about 150 farmers. And instead of just one harvest a year, some farmers said they would be able to coax three from their fields now that they’ll have a reliable source of water.”

Close to half a million people in Port-au-Prince were homeless and makeshift camps began to form. WFP distributed MREs (meals ready to eat) to those with no cooking facilities in the city. Meals were also delivered to other quake areas, Leogane and Jacmel.

As schools across Haiti reopened, WFP resumed its school meals programme, led by the Government of Haiti, with the aim to provide 800,000 children across the country with a warm, nutritious meal once a day.

We have moved to supporting the rebuilding of the country,’ said World Food Programme spokeswoman Emilia Casella. ‘This is the time now, when we will be able to build a better Haiti for all the people there,’ Casella told reporters in Geneva .
