Monsanto has been trying for years to gain approval for its genetically modified Roundup-Ready alfalfa seed. On January 27, 2011, it finally got the green light in the form of “deregulation.” This means that farmers are free to plant GE alfalfa, and the USDA won’t even be keeping track of who plants it where. There will be no tracking, no notification system, and no responsibility on the part...

The House GOP's Plan to Redefine Rape →
adamquinn:
Rape is only really rape if it involves force. So says the new House Republican majority as it now moves to change abortion law.
For years, federal laws restricting the use of government funds to pay for abortions have included exemptions for pregnancies resulting from rape or incest. (Another exemption covers pregnancies that could endanger the life of the woman.) But the “No...

Risk of Riots Rising as Governments Cut Food...
“We’re in an era where the world and nations ignore the food issue at their peril,” Josette Sheeran (WFP) said in an interview yesterday at the agency’s Rome headquarters.
The global recession has eroded government aid that helped people in poorer countries afford bread, cooking oils and other staples. The trend raises the odds of unrest even though prices have improved in many nations from...

Farmers in East Timor use new agriculture...
Rice is one of the most important crops in East Timor, but it has become expensive and unreliable to grow due to the cost of fertilisers, seeds, and changes in seasonal rainfall patterns. East Timor currently needs to import large amounts of rice because local rice farmers simply can’t meet local demand.
“Before joining the farming co-operative, we earned just $156 per year. But now, our...

Climate Change and Hunger
The connection between climate and hunger was made abundantly clear this summer when torrential rain lashed Pakistan, causing devastating flooding that submerged farmland, obliterated crops and left 10 million people in need of food aid.
So, one of the reasons why WFP is interested in Cancun is that climate and climate change affect us directly — if there are more floods, droughts and...

3 month since flooding in Pakistan--
Large tracts of Pakistan are still submerged and hundreds of thousands of people are living onbunds, or embankments, without any regular access to food supplies. Food must be flown in, or sent by boat or hovercraft.
This is the situation right now in many parts of the southern province Sindh, where large areas of land – particularly in Dadu and Jamshoro districts – may remain under water for...

Test your hunger IQ (it takes about 2 minutes) and then spread the word!
An idea:
Lets all quit being selfish, or stop diluting ourselves into believing its instinct. I think all of us could learn a lot more if we stopped talking about ourselves, and believing we deserve nice cars and a puppy.

Sweden Wins!
“At a time when concerns are growing about the impact that volatility on global food markets is having on the lives of the hungry, this latest Swedish pledge means that the vulnerable will not be forgotten,” said WFP Executive Director, Josette Sheeran. “Earthquakes, floods and droughts this year have threatened the livelihoods of people living in Haiti, Pakistan and Niger. Drought withers Syrian farms
After four consecutive years of drought, this heartland of the Fertile Crescent — including much of neighboring Iraq— appears to be turning barren, climate scientists say. Ancient irrigation systems have collapsed, underground water sources have run dry and hundreds of villages have been abandoned as farmlands turn to cracked desert and grazing animals die off. Sandstorms have become far more...

Global hunger 'unacceptably high', UN report says
The FAO estimates there are 925 million undernourished people in 2010, compared with 1.02 billion in 2009.
But it warned that the fight to reduce hunger would face additional obstacles if food prices continue to rise.
A separate report from Action Aid estimates that hunger costs developing countries $450bn (£292bn) a year.
The report says that 90% of these costs stem from lost productivity as...
